Cricket News: What's doing next for Tendulkar?

Retired sports stars often struggle to build a life away from the game, but for record-breaking cricketer Sachin Tendulkar the transition will be particularly painful.

The Indian batsman admitted he never imagined life beyond cricket as he pursued his passion for most of his 40 years -- more than half of them as an international player.
"All my life, I have had a dream of playing cricket for India. I have been living this dream every day for the last 24 years," Tendulkar said Thursday as he announced his retirement.
"It's hard for me to imagine a life without playing cricket because it's all I have ever done since I was 11 years old."
The Mumbai batsman, who said he will retire after playing his 200th Test next month, will at least not have to worry about where his next rupee is coming from.
The multi-millionaire is listed by Forbes among the world's highest-paid sportspersons, with annual earnings of $18.6 million -- $16.5 million from endorsements and $2.1 million from cricket -- in the financial year that ended in June.
Tendulkar, who has millions of devoted fans, already serves in India's parliament, the first active sportsperson to do so. But the veteran will almost certainly be offered a job as a commentator, while former cricketers are hoping he takes up coaching.
Tendulkar accepted a government offer last year to take up a seat in parliament's upper house. The special category is usually reserved for those contributing to the arts, sciences or social services.
Many were surprised that someone who has steered clear of controversy had decided to enter India's muck-raking world of politics, but Tendulkar was determined to make his six-year tenure count.
"I am in a better position not only to help cricket but also other sports in the country," he said soon after his swearing-in last June.
"I would be happy if I am remembered as someone who has contributed to all sports in India rather than just my cricket statistics."
A lucrative career in television commentary is an option for Tendulkar, following in the footsteps of a host of international cricketers.
He would be in good company alongside former team-mates like Kapil Dev, Ravi Shastri, Sanjay Manjrekar, Navjot Sidhu, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly.
The soft-spoken introvert may not be an ideal candidate, but a senior TV executive said production houses will still queue up to sign the "Little Master".
"Sachin is too big a player not to attract TV companies," said the executive, who did not want to be named. "What he says is worth its weight in gold."
Kapil, who played alongside Tendulkar in the Indian team from 1989 to 1994, hoped the master batsman would devote some time to coaching young players.
"Sachin will have many options before him, but I wish he will also spare time to pass on his invaluable knowledge to youngsters," Kapil told AFP. "They will hang on to every word of his."
Tendulkar misses no opportunity these days to spend time with wife Anjali and their two children, Sara and Arjun, which effectively rules out a travelling job with the Indian team in the immediate future.
Charity work will also take up Tendulkar's time, especially his sponsorship of 200 underprivileged children every year through Apnalaya, a Mumbai-based NGO associated with his mother-in-law, Annabel Mehta.
He has also helped to raise funds for cancer research and the building of basic facilities in government schools across the country, especially toilets for girl students.

Sports News: A terrific return to the team: Yuvraj Singh

Comeback king Yuvraj guides India to victory

Only T20: India beat Australia by six wickets.

A terrific return to the team: Yuvraj Singh
A terrific return to the team: Yuvraj Singh

RAJKOT: On a day eclipsed by the announcement of Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement date, an obliteration of no less severity was carried out by Yuvraj Singh at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium. The southpaw smashed a 35-ball 77, including five sixes and eight fours, in his comeback match for India, as the hosts chased down Australia’s impressive 201 in a thrilling last-over finish to the solitary Twenty20 game.

Amid the constant threat of a downpour, all that rained on the ground were monster hits, first by Aaron Finch (89, 52b) and then, just when it appeared that the required rate had spiraled beyond redress, by Yuvraj. It looked all over for India when Virat Kohli (29) was the fourth top-order batsman out, with the score on exactly 100 in the 12th over, the home side having already lost the dangerous Rohit Sharma (8), Shikhar Dhawan (32) and Suresh Raina (19).

Yuvraj had other ideas. He got going with a flick off Nathan Coulter-Nile and deftly guided Clint McKay to the third-man fence. With the asking rate still in rapid escalation, drastic action was the need of the hour. And Yuvraj readily obliged, taking 18 from McKay’s 14th over - including a flicked six that Shane Watson almost caught at long-on - and 20 from the usually tight James Faulkner’s 17th  of the innings.

Yuvraj raced to his fifty in just 25 balls and India were left with 29 to win from the last three. With the left-hander in such form, that turned out to be a formality, and victory was realised with two deliveries to spare, for once skipper Dhoni relegated to a secondary role with an unbeaten 21-ball 24. The pair had added an unbroken 102 in just 8.3 overs. Also deserving of an honourable mention are R Vinay Kumar (4-0-26-3) and Ravindra Jadeja (4-0-23-1) who imposed some decorum when Australia were tearing away in their first innings.

Gruesome

The visitors were gruesome from the get-go after Dhoni sent them in. Finch and debutant Nic Maddinson went after the seaming Kumars, forcing the Indian captain to call in his trump card R. Ashwin as early as in the third over of the innings. The off-spinner failed miserably, conceding 17 as Finch made room to punish him repeatedly through cover.

Ishant Sharma’s lively pace was greeted by a ferocious pulled six by Maddinson. The left-handed debutant looked untouchable in his 15-ball 34, before heaving across the line and losing his off-stump to Bhuvneshwar.

Finch continued to pound Ishant as Australia reached 74/1 at the end of the mandatory Powerplay. A double jolt was then effected by Vinay Kumar to send back Shane Watson and skipper Bailey, for a three-ball duck, in the eighth over.

If that were possible, the wickets worsened India’s situation.

Million dollar man

For in came Glenn Maxwell. The million-dollar man took 24 from an Ashwin over, sending him out of the attack with figures of 2-0-41-0, leading Dhoni to ring in another change. Virat Kohli revved into action with the ball, but the result was the same as Maxwell’s acceleration attained logic-defying proportions, the innings 100 coming up in the 10th over.

Finch, meanwhile, had reeled in a lightning half-century off just 29 balls, and once Ravindra Jadeja, the pick of the bowlers, had Maxwell caught by Ishant within inches of the long-on boundary, the onus of a big total rested firmly with Finch.

Vinay Kumar’s stunning reflex catch off his own full-toss claimed Finch in the 17th over. And the last four overs yielded just 29 as India somewhat arrested the flow of runs. Faulkner’s last-ball six assured a score in excess of 200, a stiff target rendered powerless thanks to the comeback man.

Sports News: Chennai Super Kings may be barred from IPL auction

Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals face the possibility of being banned from the Indian Premier League auction next year.

Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals face the possibility of being banned from the Indian Premier League auction next year. Cricket Association of Bihar secretary Aditya Verma said that he would file a petition with the Supreme Court to not allow the two franchises to participate till the probe into the alleged spot-fixing and betting scandal in the sixth season of the cash-rich league is complete.

“We will file an application requesting the honorable court to at least disallow the two franchisees, Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, from taking part in the auction till the time the final report of the probe is out,” Verma told Deccan Chronicle.

The apex court on Tuesday appointed a three-member panel comprising former Punjab and Haryana high court chief justice Mukul Mudgal, senior advocate and additional solicitor general L. Nageshwar Rao and Assam Cricket Association member Nilay Dutta to look into allegations of alleged corruption in IPL-6.

Verma also said that he was happy that the SC has formed a new probe panel and directed the BCCI not to interfere in any manner.

“My plea for the formation of an independent commission has been allowed, why I shouldn’t be happy? The court has given power to the panel and if there is some interference by anyone within the board, it can approach the court in that case. I have faith in the judiciary," he told Deccan Chronicle.

Verma’s fight with the BCCI started in July when he filed a petition in the Bombay High Court questioning the clean chit given by the Board’s two-member commission- comprising former judges Jayram Chouta and R Balasubramaniam in the spot-fixing scam.

The Bihar association had argued in court that a previous internal BCCI probe had absolved BCCI president N Srinivasan, his son-in-law and team principal of CSK, Gurunath Meiyappan, India Cements and other IPL officials of wrongdoing even before police had filed charges in court.

The new Supreme Court-appointed panel, whose expenses will be borne by the BCCI, was given four months to submit its findings to the court; that deadline, however, is likely to overlap the dates for the IPL auction.

The probe will be separate from investigations by police, who have filed charges in court against a string of officials, players and bookmakers for illegal betting on the IPL.

Tendulkar to Quit after 200th test

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Sachin Tendulkar, the world's most prolific international run-scorer, will retire after playing his 200th test match at home against West Indies next month.
"All my life, I have had a dream of playing cricket for India. I have been living this dream every day for the last 24 years," the 40-year-old, who compiled a record 100 international centuries, said in a statement released by the Indian cricket board (BCCI) on Thursday.
"It's hard for me to imagine a life without playing cricket because it's all I have ever done since I was 11 years old.
"It's been a huge honour to have represented my country and played all over the world. I look forward to playing my 200th test match on home soil, as I call it a day."
Tendulkar, who made his debut against bitter rivals Pakistan in 1989 as a sixteen-year old, has gone on to accumulate 15,837 runs in 198 tests and 18,246 runs in 463 one-day internationals.
He played just one Twenty20 match for India against South Africa in December 2006, before retiring from the shortest format of international cricket.
Tendulkar fulfilled his long-cherished dream of winning the World Cup when India won the tournament in 2011 at home and last December he hung up his boots from the 50 overs game to make way for youngsters.
Talk of Tendulkar's retirement had polarised opinions in the cricket-mad nation and speculation was rife after the BCCI announced a two-test series at home in November against the Caribbean side.
"I thank the BCCI for everything over the years and for permitting me to move on when my heart feels it's time!" Tendulkar. "I thank my family for their patience and understanding.
"Most of all, I thank my fans and well-wishers who through their prayers and wishes have given me the strength to go out and perform at my best."
